At CARFAX we use the unique 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to get the history of your imported used US car or one that you are interested in.

Every CARFAX report contains information that can impact your buying decision. CARFAX Reports for used US cars may include:

  • Title information, including salvage or junk titles
  • Flood damage history
  • Total loss accident history
  • Odometer readings
  • Lemon history
  • Number of owners
  • Accident indicators, such as airbag deployments
  • State emissions inspection results
  • Service records
  • Vehicle use (taxi, rental, lease, etc.)
  • Frame damage

The factors mentioned above all have impact on the value and safety of a used US car. For example, if the airbags have been deployed in an accident, they must always be replaced properly. A more than average count or the fact that a car was once registered as part of a fleet also impacts the value of a vehicle.

Cars which have been classified as a total loss or with flood damage often re-appear on the market and can be sold to unsuspecting buyers in different states or overseas.

To establish how many owners a given vehicle has had, CARFAX uses proprietary technology. Look out for the CARFAX-1-owner vehicle emblem on the CARFAX report.

To check the odometer readings a vehicle has had, CARFAX includes DMV-reported odometer problems. In addition, we run an odometer rollback check on every VIN Report you run to help you identify possible odometer fraud.

Even minor incidents can cause frame damage which considerably reduces the value of a car or makes it dangerous to drive. The CARFAX Vehicle History report may show whether a vehicle has suffered frame damage.

CARFAX Vehicle History is a valuable tool when deciding to buy a used car imported from the US. Whilst you may not want to base your decision on the CARFAX Report alone, it will be of great help to you and will enable you to make your buying decision. In addition to purchasing the CARFAX Report, we recommend that you take a thorough test drive and have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before you buy.
