Motorcycles have an average mileage of 35,000 km, a figure that rises to 41,000 km in the case of imported vehicles.
Half of the motorcycles in circulation in Spain have had two or more owners.
Only 8% are driven with some associated risk, including mileage inconsistencies, rentals, and imports.
November 25th, 2025 – The motorcycle sector is booming: the trend reflects an increase in both purchases and traffic of these vehicles. According to data from ANESDOR (National Association of Companies in the Two-Wheel Sector), the market for motorcycles and light vehicles grew by 10% in 2024, the best figure since 2008.
In this context of expansion, and especially at a time when many drivers are taking the opportunity to service their motorcycles or even treat themselves to a "Christmas gift" in the form of a two-wheeler, CARFAX, Europe's leading private provider of vehicle histories, has conducted a study on the condition of more than 3.7 million of these vehicles, offering interesting data on their use, age, and possible associated risks.
Firstly, the average age is around 12 years per vehicle, although 44% of the total are over 15 years old. This data reflects, on the one hand, an aging fleet due to the presence of increasingly older motorcycles and, on the other hand, a dynamic market, with an increase in the purchase of new units that are gradually contributing to its renewal.
In terms of ownership, 49% of motorcycles have had two or more owners, reflecting the particular importance of the second-hand market among users of these vehicles.
In terms of mileage, motorcycles accumulate an average of 35,000 km, a figure that rises to 41,000 km in the case of imported vehicles and falls to 31,000 km for those belonging to rental fleets. This variation may be due both to more intensive use of imported motorcycles before they arrive in the country and to the higher turnover and renewal of models intended for rental.
In fact, the latter have an average age of only 8 years, which means that they are used more intensively than other motorcycles, a relevant factor to take into account for anyone considering purchasing a vehicle with these characteristics.
Only 8% of motorcycles in circulation have any associated risk, just under 300,000 units. Among these risks are mileage inconsistencies, present in 3% of the vehicles analyzed (about 110,000 units), and the origin of rental or motosharing fleets, accounting for 2% of the total (74,500 units), factors that can affect their market value and actual condition.
Their geographical distribution is concentrated in some of the most populated areas: the cities with the highest concentration of motorcycles are Barcelona, with 17% of the total number of units, Madrid, with 11%, and Malaga, which accounts for 5% of units nationwide.
Finally, the motorcycle fleet in Spain is composed almost entirely of gasoline models, with only 1% of the units analyzed being electric motorcycles. This data reflects that, despite the growing interest in sustainable mobility and public policies in favor of transport electrification, the acquisition of this type of vehicle remains very limited.
With the boom in the motorcycle market, and especially with the growth in the vehicle sales market, CARFAX has established itself as an essential ally in ensuring transparency in the purchasing process. Its detailed reports provide information on the vehicle's history, taking into account its previous mileage, possible damage, or number of previous owners, contributing to improved road safety, market reliability, and user confidence at all times.
